The Institute of Water (IoW) South West announces winner of their “Pride in the South West Award”.

Candidates for the prestigious, annual award must live in the IoW South West region, be passionate about water and the South West, and show how they “deliver meaningful benefits to the people, communities or the environment in the region.” This year’s winner is Peter Henley who fulfils all the criteria in spades!

As well as his 33 years’ experience in sewer and drain operations, culminating as Principal Consultant in Wastewater Infrastructure at the Water Research Company (WRc), Peter is a champion of the correct use of sewers and drains.

His passion for improving everything to do with our sewers extends well beyond the standard work of a consultant in the sector, from tree roots through to blockages and storm/combined sewer overflows.

Peter’s work hasn’t just benefited the South-West, it has impacted the whole of the UK water industry, as well as internationally by training trainers and individuals across the globe on MSCC5 for sewer inspection. He has been an expert witness for sewer misuse cases, co-authored several publications widely used by the industry, and is known colloquially as ‘3Ps Pete’ as the result of his quest in local and national media to promote the message of ‘Pee, Poo and Paper’ as the only things that should be flushed.

“It came as a massive surprise to win this award. It is a real privilege to be recognised by my peers. You do your day-to-day work but you don’t expect to be recognised, so it is brilliant. I’m really pleased” said Peter on being presented with the Kanagawa Wave trophy at WRc’s Swindon office.
