High-level wastewater treatment and regulations training for new EA staff

In collaboration with CIWEM, WRc delivered hybrid training for new EA Water Quality Officers requiring a high-level overview of wastewater treatment processes and regulations, which received resounding feedback from delegates.

Delivered

a bespoke 11-week programme including 8 self-paced, interactive online modules solidified by an on-site module and 2.5 days’ classroom (including software) training.

Partnered

with CIWEM to create a comprehensive training solution from an unrivalled database of research and knowledge from a collective of industry professionals.

Awarded

successful delegates with TechCIWEM certification, allowing application of learning to their overall professional development journey.

Client: Environment Agency (EA)

UK Government body funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Partner: Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)

UK independent professional body working to advance the science and practice of water and environmental resource management for global sustainability.

The Challenge

The Environment Agency needed a training package to bring all their new Water Quality officers up to the same level of training and knowledge across several high-level learning objectives.

The Solution

WRc combined CIWEM’s position as a Royal Chartered Institute with its unrivalled database of research and knowledge, along with collective access to industry-leading trainers and industry professionals. From this collaboration, WRc created a comprehensive training solution that delivered the best possible development programme for the EA. The result was a bespoke training package tailored to meet the needs of the EA’s new Water Quality officers who were from a variety of backgrounds and levels of water industry experience. The package delivered four high-level learning objectives: 1. Regulatory framework and performance measures. 2. Wastewater cycle, network design and operational activities. 3. Wastewater treatment. 4. Bio recycling assets.

The face-to-face sessions included site visits and use of the WRc Operator Training Tool: a unique SCADA simulator based on WRc's STOAT dynamic modelling software that replicates on-site wastewater events at a sewage treatment works, giving users the opportunity to recover the situation in a life-like setting and see what it looks like when everything is working correctly.

The Outcome

The EA’s Water Quality Managers reported greater confidence in their knowledge of what the wastewater treatment processes should look like and how they should operate when they are running smoothly, which allows for a far better appreciation of when things are not appearing or functioning as normal. The managers confirmed that the networking opportunity and support from classmates across the country was valuable, allowing them to recognise who has more experience in certain aspects of wastewater, and which peers they could learn from, including those they would never have otherwise met.

The delegates were assessed individually by professional interview at the end of the course, and were graded by CIWEM and WRc assessors. On successful completion of the interview, delegates received TechCIWEM certification.

All material was designed and mapped against CIWEM Chartership mandatory competencies, allowing participants to understand where it applies to their overall professional development journey.

I liked that an industry professional explained and elaborated on working in the Water Industry from an industry point of view, rather than a regulator point of view.

I very much enjoy the traditional classroom style presentations for this type of technical learning course, but it was nice to have the exercise too, to chat to and hear from colleagues and share stories of our experiences.

Legislation isn't the most exciting of topics but it was well explained at a suitable level to understand its relevance to our regulatory work. First time I've had all relevant legislation summarised in one place and I found it very useful and clear. Good introduction to wastewater treatment, set me up well for the next modules.

Loved learning about the different types of bacteria, took me back to my university days! Facilitator was clearly very knowledgeable in this area and gave good explanations to complex questions. Also gained a lot from the computer simulation and familiarising myself with the system.

The content was useful and relevant to the EA role - we often get involved where a treatment plant has failed, so it is useful to understand the causes of failure and what a water company should be doing to prevent them from happening in the first place or to return a plant back into operation after a failure.

There was quite a high level of detail in the technical sections without an overloading of information. This made it quite easy to digest, while still providing in depth knowledge.

I had not really appreciated the importance of preliminary treatment. I will certainly be paying closer attention to this part of the process in future OSM inspections!
