Metering training developed for water utilities

WRc's 'Source to Tap' metering course has been successfully delivered to a range of water utilities delegates who required a best-practice introduction to metering principles, technology and regulations.

Developed

a bespoke training course identified by the client as previously unavailable in the industry, which has since rolled out to a wide range of water providers.

Tailored

course delivery to the needs of different teams - either a 1-day condensed course, or 1.5 days covering the basics and one of three applications.

Provided

delegates with up-close demonstrations of the subject matter by an expert in the field, enriching their understanding and appreciation of the topic.

UK Water Providers

The development of this course was originally funded by a group of UK water utilities who identified a need for metering training specifically targeted for those involved in metering or used meter data, and has since benefitted delegates from multiple other water providers.

The Challenge

Metering underpins the management of water resources, treatment, distribution and billing. With increased pressure on resources, and greater scrutiny from regulators of all aspects of water management, a group of water companies identified the need to improve metering practice across their teams. As there was no specific training course on metering targeted at the water industry, WRc were asked to develop and deliver a course that would provide those involved in metering, or who used meter data, with a better understanding of metering principles, technology and regulations.

The Solution

WRc worked with the initial group of water companies to develop a training course that covered the following aspects: the basic principles of metering, selection of appropriate meters, installation of meters, and how different meter technologies worked – and their relative strengths and limitations. It also introduced different meter reading methods, from visual reading through to the types of telemetry and Automated Meter Reading (AMR), and methods for meter testing and verification.

The course was developed as four modules that could be delivered to different water company staff. Module 1 covers the basic concepts and metering technologies, while Modules 2, 3 and 4 explore these in greater detail with respect to Source and Strategic Metering, Network Metering and Customer Metering. A condensed course, covering the full scope, was also developed.

The Outcome

Since the launch of ‘Introduction to Clean Water Metering – Source to Tap’ WRc has delivered the training course to a wide range of staff from a number of water providers – both the original group that funded the development and to other utility companies. Training was delivered face to face with time for discussion about particular issues that delegates had encountered. WRc provided examples of different meter types for delegates to examine and get some hands-on understanding of how they worked, which was welcomed by many.

This course was very informative and provided me with an insights into aspects of metering and principles I hadn’t previously appreciated. Very good two days’ education.

The detailed explanation of each meter type and their applications was very useful. Actual meters were available for us to visually inspect. This was useful as I had not seen some of them before.
