Sharing our expertise

We understand that affordability of investment plans is important for your business and your customers, but not at the expense of sacrificing operational service effectiveness.

Our experts deliver evidence-based advice to utilities on how, where and when to invest in their physical assets for the medium and long term.

This advice is underpinned by engineering and operational expertise combined with one or more statistical, reliability, hydraulic and water quality models to deliver a multi-objective, optimal investment plan.

Developing network intervention strategy

We continue to develop new applications and improved methods to support our clients' decision making in network investment planning and prioritisation. Our data-driven analytics, supported by physical reasoning, informs intervention strategies for asset replacement and rehabilitation.

Modelling asset failure and deterioration

Our asset failure investigations for utility clients can diagnose the root cause of an individual component or asset failure, or take a systems approach to understanding customer service failure.

Calculating your existing carbon footprint

Using our TR61 software, we can work out your capital spend, operational spend, refurbishment and total expenditure on water and wastewater treatment and infrastructure, as well as carbon costs for capital items and operational routines.

Don't just take our word for it

  • Prioritising investment
  • Eliminating failure
  • Estimating cost efficiency

One example of recent work involved re-evaluating a client's infrastructure investment programme, accounting for costs and benefits to their business, customers and the environment.

This identified an alternative 'efficiency frontier' for our client and a revised investment programme with a higher benefit cost ratio.

Work for one recent client highlighted several known failure modes, as well as several unexpectedly prominent fault states at a given site.

Our risk assessment process revealed a significant site power failure, and, for a relatively small investment in standby generation, this customer service failure risk could be virtually eliminated.

One recent application of our cost and carbon modelling software has been to generate bottom-up costs for all of a client's treatment works to estimate relative efficiency factors for operational and maintenance labour, energy and materials.

A second application has used a combination of WRc's treatment works expertise combined with capex and apex cost drivers from TR61 to assess the economic implications of stricter environmental permits imposed by the regulator.

Wider resilience services

By blending data science, economics and specialist engineering modelling techniques, we are in a unique position to offer our clients consultancy services on wider aspects that contribute to a resilient asset base:

  • Predictive modelling of asset health for optimal investment planning
  • Network water quality advice and consultancy to improve water quality compliance and reduce operational costs
  • Totex modelling and carbon footprinting using our TR61 software
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy development
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of water and wastewater facilities, including reservoirs and treatment processes
  • Development of (and compliance with) asset standards, such as EN 752, ISO 55001 and ISO 31001
  • Advice on CESWI and Sewerage Risk Management (SRM) best practice

Asset resilience for future generations

The primary concern of the water industry is the protection of human health through the supply of water which is safe to drink.

Our water quality and environmental scientists, process engineers and data science team are regularly called upon to collaboratively diagnose and recommend solutions to improve water quality compliance and reduce operational costs.

Read more about how we have improved water quality in private networks, various water storage reservoirs, Water Safety Plans and discolouration studies.
