An introduction to SRM

Sewer systems are a vital part of a nation's infrastructure and play an essential role in maintaining public health, protecting our environment and managing surface water flood risk. Yet they are largely out of sight, which was often a cause of neglect in the past, leading to sewer flooding, polluting discharges, collapse and blockage – so solutions were often unplanned, piecemeal and uncoordinated.

WRc has led the development of structural sewerage risk management, starting with the publication of the Sewerage Rehabilitation Manual in 1983, with revisions being released in 1986, 1994, 2001, 2008 and 2015 to take account of changes in legislation and regulation. It also included one of the earliest guides to the design of sewer renovation systems.

Two-part Manual

The Sewerage Rehabilitation Manual is published in two parts, which are widely used internationally:

  • Sewerage Risk Management Guide
  • Sewer Renovation Design Guide (currently being extensively updated and a new edition will be published in Summer 2022.)

There are also a number of supporting documents including The Manual of Sewer Condition Classification and Model Contract Document for Sewer Condition Inspection.

The SRM planning approach has been adopted worldwide and is the basis of the Sewerage Planning procedures in the following European and International Standards:

EN 752 Drain and sewer systems outside buildings. Sewer system management and EN 13508-1 Investigation and assessment of drain and sewer systems outside buildings - General Requirements and through that in ISO 24516-3 Guidelines for the management of assets of water supply and wastewater systems — Part 3: Wastewater collection networks.

The diagram gives a very brief view of some of the guidance and content that can be found on the full website (secure area), which is available to purchase via our WRc Knowledge Store for a one time only registration fee, per location. The full website contains all the content of the printed version, in a different structure, which may be more convenient for users.

Nick Orman

Principal Consultant (Wastewater Networks)

Nick is a Principal Consultant at WRc with over 35 years' experience in the water sector. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager. His specialist areas include sewer inspection technologies, sewer deterioration mechanisms, sewer collapse analysis, sewer hydraulic modelling and cost analysis of sewer flooding schemes. Nick was a major contributor to the SRM Sewer Risk Management website and is the Technical Lead on the revision of the SRM Sewer Renovation Design Guide. He has been involved in the drafting or updating of many of the guidance documents relating to sewerage, examples include Sewers for Adoption, the Civil Engineering Specification for the Water Industry and the Manual for Sewer Condition Classification.
