Optimising water resources planning & management

WRc offers water resources modelling services to aid in managing water resources in the short to long-term. Our team of specialists can build and develop new water resources models and tools, as well as utilise existing models across a variety of platforms to analyse the impact of multiple different water resources scenarios, including the assessment of the supply-demand deficit and impact on deployable output. The model outputs can inform water resources risk assessments and decision-making in water resources planning. Our modelling specialists work alongside specialists in other areas such as water resources, climate change and water quality to provide clients with high quality outputs.

Water resources modelling by WRc can assist you to assess:

  • The supply-demand deficit of a region under different scenarios
  • Water resources risk
  • Water availability for a healthy ecosystem
  • Decision-making in water resources planning
  • Drought planning
  • The impact of changes to abstraction
  • Infrastructure planning
  • The impacts of climate change
  • The impacts of changes to land use/land cover

        Holistic water resources modelling

WRc developed a method to incorporate water quality within water resource modelling, Pywr-WQ. This is based on the Open Source, fast generalised network water allocation modelling system Pywr. Water quality often limits usable raw water, and most existing water resources modelling assessments do not explicitly consider the impact of water quality on the amount of water available for supply. Pywr-WQ addresses this shortcoming with the following benefits:

        • The ability to assess the water quality implications of mixing different sources of water
        • Integrating water quality constraints into long-term planning for security of supply
        • Better inform treatment operations and cost implications for specific sites
        • Providing insight into the relationship between water quantity and quality
        • Increasing confidence in planning

Pywr also offers the ability to integrate further areas, such as agriculture and energy, to provide sustainable water management solutions. Optimisation in Pywr can assist in identifying solutions within a water resources system that provide optimal trade-offs in objectives.

            Water Supply Consultant

Fiona has experience in a range of water supply areas including water quality - customer complaints, water fittings regulations, flow and pressure surveys, and asset resilience. Her primary area is water resources modelling, with both water company and consultancy experience. This aids Fiona's strong ability to understand the needs of clients, and design project ,methodology and outputs that are practically useful. Fiona appreciates how water provides multiple services for communities beyond water supply, and enjoys working with clients to identify and deliver optimal solutions. While working at WRc, Fiona was part of the core team exploring how to account for water quality limitations during water resources planning, which resulted in an UKWIR project. Fiona was seconded to Anglian Water for water resources modelling support, supported Pywr model development, and supported the development of Pywr-WQ.
