Peter Henley

Peter is a recognised industry professional in wastewater infrastructure with a particular focus on sewer operations, condition assessment and rising main operation. He has worked on sewer operational best practice guides and leads delivery of technical training in sewer condition classification, drain investigation and drain repair both in the UK and internationally. Peter is also a sewer CCTV survey specialist.

Please note the development and delivery of this course also utilises WRc's wider team in order to offer a well-rounded and maximised learning experience.

Course overview

Developed by wastewater infrastructure specialists, this course will provide water and engineering sector professionals with a basic understanding of sewerage networks, covering urban drainage priorities; health and safety; and materials. Upon course completion, delegates will be able to:

  • Outline the key principles of sewerage network requirements for performance and function.
  • Describe key safety hazards and their management in wastewater networks.
  • Explain the performance of key materials in wastewater environments and when they are used.

Delegates may include junior engineers, consultants and operatives seeking an introduction or refresher to ensure solid foundational knowledge to support their future career. Delegates may also include professionals in adjacent sectors looking for an overview of sewerage networks to complement and expand their industry knowledge.

The course is interactive, with a mix of lecture, group discussion, and exercises to facilitate an engaging learner experience. An end-of course multiple choice assessment effectively demonstrates knowledge transfer. Learners will be equipped with an understanding of:

  • Urban Drainage Priorities: Objectives, system types, functional requirements, and performance requirements.
  • Health and Safety: Principles of safety management, design for safety, and key wastewater hazards.
  • Material Properties and Selection Principles:
    - Materials used, and key impacts on material performance in a wastewater environment (including failure modes).
    - Flexible and rigid materials; Septicity and Corrosion.
    - Thermoplastics materials; Thermosetting plastics materials.
    - Clayware; Concrete; Metals.
