Tool details

This software tool is a training resource for water companies to simulate various possible failures in water treatment operation, or membrane process operation, for operators to diagnose and resolve - ensuring staff can demonstrate competency in responding to non-routine failures and troubleshooting problems.

Jeremy Dudley

Jeremy has been a consultant engineer at WRc since 1987, specialising in mathematical modelling. He has contributed to the development of, and training in, various water and wastewater treatment software, and applies these tools to assess sewage works' performance, sewage works design, and the impact of discharges on estuaries. These include STOAT, Plan-It STOAT, OTTER and SimEau, environmental modelling software (QUESTS and SIMPOL), TR61 (Cost & Carbon Model), and Operator Training Tools for both Potable Water and Wastewater.

Training Tool overview

At a potable water treatment works diagnosing the cause of system failures quickly is critical. Operators need to be familiar with the types and causes of problems that can occur and have the knowledge to reach for the resolution. Yet as these systems so rarely go wrong, staff cannot rely on their own experience of these once-in-a-career failure events. Guidance for trouble-shooting are administered by water companies, but how can knowledge be effectively transferred and individual competency be assessed?

The Potable Water Operator Training Tool provides a means for operators to experience a set of simulated failure scenarios for them to diagnose and resolve. When used as part of a wider water company-led training programme, operators will be able to:

  • Gain an updated understanding of non-routine water treatment work failures
  • Know how to troubleshoot operational problems at water treatment plants
  • Demonstrate their understanding by providing an (e.g., annual) independent Competency Assessment based on their recorded responses

The tool is provided as locally-installed software or a web-enabled secure interface. A user guide is provided, along with a set of scenarios for membrane filtration. The software simulates various possible failures, and the Operators will have the opportunity to diagnose and resolve the possible failures, and to record their the observations and responses. Sand filtration and additional scenarios for other water treatment works processes can be developed upon request.

    Who can benefit?

The software tool is ideal for fitting into wider water company-led training on either water treatment operation or membrane process operation. Written guidance materials, support and assessment are to be provided by the water company to ensure training is relevant to company-specific operations. The tool can be purchased as a stand-alone desktop solution (per user), or, as a web-enabled interface for up to 8 students at a time, with the option to register users as required.

For users of the software, prior knowledge of drinking water membrane plants is essential, along with a water company-specific trouble-shooting guide.

        Developed by experts

This software, which has been used by multiple water companies, is based on the architecture of WRc's globally-used STOAT WWtW modelling freeware.

WRc technical specialists have long been at the forefront of software development in the waste and wastewater industries, and regularly utilise them to assess works' performance, design, and environmental impacts. These include STOAT, Plan-It STOAT, OTTER and SimEau, environmental modelling software (QUESTS and SIMPOL), TR61 (Cost & Carbon Model), and Potable Water and Wastewater Operator Training Tools.
