Based on WRc's Drain Repair Book, this course develops learners' understanding of drains and sewer design, ownership and inspection methods, as well as their skills in commissioning surveys and repairs, to ensure work is appropriate, cost-effective and of high quality.

Peter Henley

Peter is a recognised industry professional in wastewater infrastructure with a particular focus on sewer operations, condition assessment and rising main operation. He has worked on sewer operational best practice guides and leads delivery of technical training in sewer condition classification, drain investigation and drain repair both in the UK and internationally. Peter is a CCTV specialist, and a CCTV technical champion within WRc.

Course overview

This training focuses on a range of core competencies necessary for a full understanding of drainage systems, investigation, and repair of domestic and light industrial drains, with special emphasis is given to the impact of repair selection on cost and performance. Upon course completion, delegates will gain a thorough understanding of::

  • The design, layout and construction of drains and common causes of failure
  • Determining ownership and responsibility for drain and sewer maintenance
  • Best practice requirements of the insurance industry
  • Methods for inspection such as CCTV surveys and leakage testing
  • Condition grading and assessment
  • Correctly commissioning and interpreting investigations
  • Selecting appropriate repair techniques and specifications
  • Cost and performance implications
  • Monitoring the quality of work

  • Module 5: Drain Investigation Overview of methods and procedures for drain inspection, including: Site investigation; Drain cleaning; CCTV inspection; Leakage testing
  • Module 6: Condition Grading & Need for Repairs
  • Module 7: Sewage Treatment Systems How and why they fail, how investigations should be undertaken and what should be considered when repairing
  • Module 8: Selection of Repair TechniquesConsideration of all available techniques; relative costs; appropriate selection of repair techniques
  • Module 9: Specifying RepairsSpecification for on-site repair work; specification for materials including cured-in-place resin systems
  • Module 10: Monitoring the Quality of Repair Work
