Course overview
This course provides on-site workers with the essential practical skills to competently follow the relevant specification and procedures for installing replacement pipes for domestic potable water supply.
Classroom, hands-on tool demonstration and on-site formats are used to demonstrate the transfer of detailed, technical knowledge, to allow staff to perform their duties to the highest quality and efficiency, while ensuring the water provider can minimise leakage and safeguard supply for their customers. Upon completion, delegates will be able to:
- Know how to safely re-use existing saddles/ferrules
- Competently carry out an electrofusion weld
- Apply the safety and procedural requirements for laying pipes in trenches
- Competently carry out a pipeline pressure test
- Describe effective service pipe connection design on a distribution network
Who can benefit?
Delegates may include on-site contractors and water company staff, for example on DMA renewal schemes, who require a standardised level of training to ensure consistency of operations.
We can also train those supervising or auditing this work - please see below.
Training outline
This course uses in-person interactive classroom training and technology demonstrations featuring Question & Answer sessions to clarify learning. A practical on-site assessment allows hands-on application to fully embed learning, enabling the transfer of detailed, technical knowledge so learners can effectively perform their duties. Modules include:
- Appropriate checks for safely reusing existing saddles.
- Correct procedure for electrofusion, including equipment, heating and cooling cycle, coupling, and recording of saddle connection and joints.
- Pipe and trench requirements including materials; health, safety & water quality procedures; trench depths; pipe bedding; pressure testing; and recording.
- Meter assembly procedure, including for single and multiple assembly, and the correct use of PTFE tape.
- Service pipe connection design on a distribution network.
*We can also offer Quality Assurance and Auditing training alongside this course, aimed at those instructing the on-site work. This equips those supervising the repairs with the knowledge and skills to recognise how the relevant specification should be followed for the safe and effective installation of replacement service pipes, ensuring work will support the reduction of leakage and supply failures, saving significant CAPEX and OPEX costs.
*The specialists who developed this training course can also provide end-to-end consultancy services for DMA renewal schemes and write the Technical Specifications specific for your business. Please enquire via the form at the bottom of this page.
