Course overview

This course focuses on improving learners' skills in highway drainage management through knowledge of maintenance standards, optimised design of traditional systems, and opportunities for sustainable drainage solutions. Upon course completion, delegates will be able to understand:

  • how to reduce the impact of highway drainage on the sewer network through better maintenance
  • how to engage more effectively with local planning authorities to minimise the impact of highway drainage on sewer systems in new developments
  • how reducing highway drainage issues can help improve public perception

    Who can benefit?

Delegates may include those needing to develop their understanding of traditional and sustainable drainage systems, alongside their professional skills in highway drainage systems, to support their current role or future career. For example, engineers and consultants working for highways authorities.

Participants may also be drawn from any area of business or service where increased knowledge of highway drainage systems may improve their decision making. For example, water companies and land developers working with sewerage systems.

    Training outline

The course is interactive, with a mix of lecture, group discussion, and exercises to facilitate an engaging learner experience. Key modules provide actionable guidance on:

    • Enhancing standards of highway maintenance
    • Improving the design of traditional drainage systems and exploring opportunities for sustainable drainage solutions
    • Demonstrating the benefits of high-quality, well-maintained highway drainage to stakeholders such as highway authorities, lead local flood authorities, and water companies
    • Reducing the impact of highway drainage on the sewer network through improved maintenance practices
    • Identifying opportunities to minimise the volume of surface water from highways connected to combined sewer systems
    • Strengthening collaboration with local planning authorities to reduce the impact of highway drainage on new developments
