Course details

Delivered by flow and metering specialist Andy Godley, this course provides users (and those directing use) of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters with a practical demonstration and detailed exploration of their operation, applications, performance and limitations for effective water flow measurement.

Duration: 1 day

Delivery: In-person

Andy Godley

Andy is WRc’s Principal Consultant for Flow Measurement and Metering. He has a strong engineering background, spending over 30 years’ specialising in flow measurement and metering, across clean and wastewater applications. Andy has developed and presented training courses for regulators and water companies alongside sitting on several UK, European and International Standards committees for electromagnetic and ultrasonic flowmeters.

Course overview

This course is designed to increase delegates' understanding of clamp-on flowmeters in order to improve water flow measurement. Upon course completion, learners will be able to:

  • Understand when clamp-on flowmeters can offer a viable alternative to other meter types
  • Successfully deploy and use clamp-on flowmeters
  • Effectively use clamp-on flowmeters for permanent, semi-permanent and temporary installations
  • Use clamp-on flowmeters to obtain data for water balance, leakage, meter verification and other applications

Who can benefit?

Delegates may include those using or directing the use of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters for water flow measurement. Participants may also be drawn from any area of business or service where knowledge in the use of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters impacts on their decision making, such as consultant engineers or manufacturers.

Training outline

  • What is a clamp-on flowmeter
  • How clamp-on flowmeters work
  • Where they are used
  • Difficulties and limitations of their use
  • Programming a typical clamp-on meter
  • Conditions that affect performance and use of diagnostics
  • Depending on the client's preferred delivery location, a practical session at WRc's on-site flow rig is used to demonstrate and explain working principles in a real-life context.
