Course details

This training equips water network technicians, engineers and operational leaders with the skills to operate valves efficiently and carry out step tests to mitigate leakage effectively. This course forms part of our 5-day 'Water Loss & Leak Detection Operative' training.

Duration: 1 day

Delivery: In-person and Online (self-paced)

Paul Ives

Paul is a Senior Consultant with 13 years' industry experience immersed in the intricate challenges and dynamics of minimising water loss and optimising water resources. His strong understanding of both leakage detection methods and calculation methodologies stems from operational and field roles as well as working on leakage strategy and analysis to gain a thorough working knowledge of water loss.

Course overview

This course is designed to provide water industry technicians, engineers and supervisors with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate sluice valves on water networks to carry out mains shutdowns and other activities.

Upon course completion, participants will have an understanding of valve operations, leak location identification, safety protocols including permit-to-work authorisations, and effective planning strategies. These skills will allow staff to operate valves efficiently and carry out step tests to mitigate water leakage effectively.

    Who can benefit?

Delegates may include technicians, engineers and operational leaders in the water industry, as well as new recruits to leak detection teams to ensure a standardised level of knowledge and training, thus consistency of valve operations.

    Training outline

Learners will be equipped with an understanding, and confidence in real-world application, of:

    • Valve Operations Techniques: Sluice valve types, risks, and best practices for operations such as valve closures and mains shutdowns, to ensure activities are carried out safely and hygienically.
    • Step Testing for Leak Detection: Principles, techniques and applications to different scenarios, including the execution of a comprehensive Valve Shut Plan.
    • Planning and Prioritising: Systematic and effective planning and prioritisation of step testing based on critical areas and operational needs. Permit-to-work authorisation protocols to ensure adherence to health and safety regulations.
