Course overview

Approved Document G of the Building Regulations for England provides the methodology for calculating the whole house potable water consumption in new dwellings, to ensure that buildings have safe and efficient plumbing systems, while promoting water conservation and preventing risks.

Following this methodology, The Water Efficiency Calculator for New Dwellings was created by WRc and the Local Authority Building Control to assist with the calculation; it provides a simple method to demonstrate compliance with national targets. The Water Efficiency Calculator incorporates the consumption of plumbed appliances, as well as the ability to include rainwater harvesting and greywater collection.

Upon completion of this short e-learning course, delegates will understand the requirements of the Calculator and be confident in using it effectively to assess compliance against the water performance targets in Regulation 36 of the Building Regulations.

    Who can benefit?

This course is suitable for property developers, builders, contractors, water companies or anyone who is using or wants to use the Calculator to assess the water efficiency of new dwellings against performance targets outlined in Part G of the Building Regulations for England.

For companies looking to train a team in the use of the software, please contact us for an e-learning group rate, or to organise a live session to include Q&A and advice on specific cases.

    Training outline

Flexible course delivery via our online leaning platform allows delegates to complete modules at their own pace and around their own schedules (equivalent of 3 hours' learning). Guided by an experienced water supply specialist, participants will watch tutorials and perform hands-on practical exercises using the calculator, instilling confidence that they can apply the knowledge gained to their roles. Users also have the opportunity to contact our dedicated team with particular questions whenever they arise.

    • A narrated tutorial first introduces the background, access requirements and important points to remember when using the calculator.
    • Learners are then guided through each tab of the calculator, highlighting common queries and mistakes, and how to overcome these.
    • Hands-on exercises provide real-world examples for learners to carry out using the calculator, which is followed up by a second tutorial to work through the answers, allowing learners to accurately evaluate their understanding.
