Course details

Designed to address the pressing need for skilled leakage engineers in the UK, this training course enables field operatives to effectively identify, locate, and mitigate leaks; ensuring learners can apply advanced techniques and best practices for water loss management.

Duration: 5 days

Delivery: In-person

Paul Ives

Paul is a Senior Consultant with 13 years' industry experience immersed in the intricate challenges and dynamics of minimising water loss and optimising water resources. His strong understanding of both leakage detection methods and calculation methodologies stems from operational and field roles as well as working on leakage strategy and analysis to gain a thorough working knowledge of water loss.

Course overview

This course was developed by WRc to equip delegates with the knowledge, skills, and techniques required to effectively identify, locate, and mitigate water leaks within a water distribution network. Upon course completion, participants will be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge in active leakage control, utilise advanced techniques, and apply best practices for water loss management.

A comprehensive assessment methodology, including an on-site practical assessment and multiple choice questionnaire, ensures participants' knowledge and practical skills are effectively evaluated. These assessments are designed to determine the participants' understanding of the subject matter and their ability to competently apply their knowledge and skills in real-world situations.

    Who can benefit?

Delegates may include new starters to the water leakage industry, or new recruits to leak detection teams, to ensure a standardised level of knowledge and training, thus consistency of operations. Typical roles could include Field Engineers and Leak Detection Operatives.

    Training outline

Learners will be equipped with an understanding, and confidence in real-world application, of:

    • An introduction to leakage: Economic and environmental implications.
    • DMA Design and Implementation: Significance, benefits, and components of effective TMA & DMA design.
    • Active Leakage Control Techniques: Practical applications: leakage detection; factors affecting acoustics; pressure and small leaks; and catastrophic failure.
    • Planning and Prioritising: Assessing leak severity, developing priority matrices, and implementing effective planning strategies.
    • Driving Down Leakage: Importance, technological advancements, and methods to minimise mistakes when Localising, Locating and Pinpointing leaks.
    • Advanced Techniques: Step Testing and Valve operations.
