Sharon Smith

Sharon has over a decade's experience consulting and training within the wastewater sector, including: wastewater analytical laboratories and R&D, sewage works failure analysis, Operations, and Wastewater Optimisation. She has also worked as a Process Coach and NVQ Assessor/Verifier, representing Thames Water in forming new National Occupational Standards for Operating Process Plant with EUSkills and CABWI. At WRc, Sharon has developed and delivered multiple courses to water treatment laboratory, operational, regulatory and management staff.

Course overview

Water regulations worldwide place a responsibility on water undertakers to apply appropriate treatment processes to ensure the water discharged to the environment and supplied to customers is safe. There is a need to ensure those working to produce drinking water have been equipped with the correct knowledge to enable them to do this effectively. This training covers the fundamentals of the processes within water treatment. Upon course completion, delegates will have:

  • Built greater expertise and capability in a range of treatment areas, including Chlorination, RO Desalination and UV Disinfection.
  • Gained the technical knowledge to allow challenges in these areas to be effectively dealt with. 

    Who can benefit?

    Delegates may include Laboratory, Operational, Water Quality and Management staff working to treat water for potable consumption, to support their current role or future career. Participants may also be drawn from any area of business or service where an increased understanding of water treatment processes may impact on their decision-making and advance their professional skills in the water sector, such as water treatment consultants and regulatory officers. 

    Training outline

    The course is interactive, with a mix of lecture, group discussion, and exercises to facilitate an engaging learner experience. Those working with water treatment processes will develop the required knowledge to address treatment challenges through modules covering the following topic areas:

    • Coagulation and Flocculation
    • Powdered Activated Carbon
    • Rapid Gravity Filtration
    • RO Desalination
    • UV Disinfection
