WRc Fine to Flush scheme wins prestigious Water Industry Award

Published on: 20 Jul 2021

WRc are delighted to announce our win at the Water & Wastewater Treatment (WWT) Water Industry Awards 2021.

Our Fine to Flush standard impressed the judges and secured the award for "Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Improvement". WRc and Water UK's Fine to Flush specification was devised to address one of the key priorities for the water industry: to protect the environment from pollution caused by improperly disposed-of wet wipes that block sewers. The judges also noted:

The standard addresses the environmental impact of micro-plastics in flushable products.

In the 2 years since the standard was published in 2019, WRc and Water UK has certified 48 different products that meet the Fine to Flush specification. These products are now widely available and are able to demonstrate that they are flushable and plastic free and do not cause environmental damage from sewage pollution caused by a blockage or pump failure linked to their use. The range of tested products includes those from most major UK retailers and the UK’s leading wipes brand. Matt Hart, Operations Director at WRc, shared:

Winning this prestigious award is fantastic recognition of the hard work that our teams, partners and clients have put into this project. We are dedicated to creating green, innovative solutions and are delighted that our efforts have been rewarded.

WRc was shortlisted in 2 categories for this year's Water Industry Awards, which recognises the best and brightest projects and individuals the water and wastewater sector has to offer. Entries were assessed by 20 judges hand picked to represent universities, regulators and consultancies. WRc's technology and innovation specialist Dr Leo Carswell will be on the judging panel for next year's awards held on 29th June 2022.

The only way is up

The number of Fine to Flush certifications has more than doubled since the scheme was presented with this award in 2021.

This rapid and widespread engagement among manufacturers and retailers has driven a positive shift in the market which, combined with improved consumer awareness, will lead to fewer sewer blockages and a reduction in their potential negative environmental impacts.

In turn, investment previously spent on the aftermath of sewer blockages can be reprioritised to deliver projects to enhance the natural environment.
