Drinking water quality training delivered to industry-wide staff

WRc Academy hosted a 3-day in-person training course to professionals across water utilities, regulation and consultancy. Lecture, exercises and discussion enhanced their fundamental knowledge of drinking water quality parameters, regulations and incidents.

Developed

an interactive course using a mixture of lecture, group discussion, guided workbook exercises, and networking opportunities

Enabled

industry professionals across various fields and knowledge levels to understand how to ensure the quality of drinking water within their work

Ensured

attendees could learn from the experiences and specialist knowledge of a WRc expert as well as individuals across various operational and regulatory roles

This project delivered training to delegates from 11 businesses including water providers as well as regulatory and industry bodies.

WRc Academy hosts Live Training Events in various topics to bring together, and share knowledge with, professionals across the industry.

The Challenge

It's crucial for professionals working across the drinking water supply system, from policy, construction, consultancy, and operations, to have a solid foundational understanding of the principles and processes used to ensure the quality of water for end users. This is true for both new starters to the industry requiring a broad knowledge of the field, as well as network scientists seeking an understanding of how their role fits into the wider water quality system. All require the confidence to recognise the impacts of water sources and distribution assets; which scientific parameters are monitored, sampled and reported; and how water quality incidents are managed, in order to bring context to, and support decision making within, their role and future career.

The Solution

WRc Academy hosted a 3-day in-person course open to individuals from across the industry, in order to increase their understanding of safeguarding public health through upholding high standards of water quality management. The course addressed learners' challenges of maintaining safe and reliable drinking water by equipping them with the knowledge to identify water quality issues, understand regulatory requirements, and respond effectively to water quality failures. It focused on monitoring practices, sampling techniques, and the impacts of distribution systems, while also emphasising best practices for handling customer disputes and complaints.

Subject matter experts and training specialists employed a range of techniques to ensure the course was highly interactive, combining lectures, group discussions, and practical exercises to create an engaging and effective learning experience. An end-of-course multiple-choice assessment was used to demonstrate knowledge transfer and confirm that delegates’ understanding had significantly improved. Sharing knowledge with participants from diverse roles and levels of experience across the water industry, as well as WRc experts during three networking lunches, encouraged meaningful discussions and facilitated a broader exchange of ideas, further enriching the learning process.

    The Outcome

The programme delivered the learning objectives to support delegates from 11 businesses in understanding various basic aspects of water quality in the clean water supply system to provide them with confidence and proficiency in ensuring safe drinking water for end users. Drawing on WRc’s experience from consultancy, expert advice, and training at all levels, this course allowed learning to develop in an open, engaging, collaborative environment and was well-received by delegates; testimonials can be viewed below.

It was a really good course with content that covered quite a broad area effectively. The learning atmosphere was really open and the group conversations and networking were really helpful. The trainer was really friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. I really liked the work book, I made lots of notes.

Angela Culter (Course Delegate - 'Ensuring Drinking Water Quality')
    Waterlevel

It will give me a better understanding of why I’m following the sampling procedure and what happens to my samples. I enjoyed how we were able to explain what we learned from each module and how it benefits our learning

Ideal course for Water Quality Scientists at the start of their career. Clear topics which flowed well, and liked the opportunity for discussion at the end of each. Very well presented.

Daniel Sharp (Course Delegate - 'Ensuring Drinking Water Quality')
    South West Water

It has enabled me to better understand the risks and concerns that companies have raised and to better articulate those to government and regulators. Being completely new to the subject, Austen was very patient, and it was helpful to hear about his own experience and projects. I liked the interactive learning style to explore issues, which was then backed up by the slides, which set out info very clearly and succinctly.

Kruti Patel (Course Delegate - 'Ensuring Drinking Water Quality')
    Water UK

I now have a better understanding of the mitigation actions that water companies carry out to try and prevent and also in response to, events. While I think this course would have been SUPER useful for me slightly earlier (~4mo into the industry), this did work as a good reinforcement of knowledge and reassurance with a few key takeaways rather than learning everything from scratch. The trainer was very approachable, very knowledgeable and worked through the information with clarity. It made for a very friendly, open atmosphere with lots of discussion which was great. I liked having a workbook for notes and exercises in one place.

Course Delegate - 'Ensuring Drinking Water Quality'

As a Water Quality Scientist, the knowledge gained will help me better assess water quality and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. It provided solid foundational knowledge and was structured in a way that made it easy to follow. The course materials were clear and engaging, with well-organized slides and a useful workbook. Austen encouraged discussions and was great at addressing questions, which really helped reinforce the key points.
