The Challenge

Training was required as part of a larger project delivering Service Pipe Renewal of 15 DMAs following a new standard of design, new material selection and improved installation processes and assurance. The client engaged WRc technical specialists in clean water networks to develop and deliver in-country training, to be followed by a demonstration of effective knowledge transfer via on-site assessment, in the use of a new WRc-authored Specification.

The Solution

An initial 1-day course was developed to provide Contractors, Engineers and Supervisors with the essential skills to competently carry out on-site work as instructed by Nama Water Services. The training was designed to be interactive, with a mix of lecture, group discussion, exercises and practical technology demonstration. Training covered:

  • Appropriate checks for safely reusing existing saddles
  • Correct procedure for electrofusion, including equipment, heating and cooling cycle, coupling, and recording of saddle connection and joints
  • Pipe and trench requirements including materials; health, safety & water quality procedures; trench depths; pressure testing; and recording
  • Meter assembly procedure, including for single and multiple assembly, and the correct use of PTFE tape
  • Service pipe connection design on a distribution network

The Outcome

WRc’s skilled trainers and technical experts facilitated attendees’ learning of detailed, technical knowledge to allow them to perform their duties to the highest quality and efficiency. The training is helping to ensure contracted workers are able to follow the relevant specification for safely and effectively installing and repairing service pipes, including the correct procedures for electrofusion and laying pipes for domestic potable water supply. This is enabling Nama Water Services continue their commitment to minimise leakage and safeguard potable supply.

The practical exercises and real-life case studies were particularly valuable as they provided hands-on experience and helped bridge the gap between theory and practice. The course materials and activities were clear and engaging, with practical exercises and well-organized slides enhancing my learning.
