Wastewater works modelling for sludge processes

More on our WwTW simulation services
UK Water and Sewerage Company (WaSC)

Water and wastewater services are provided by multiple different water companies operating across different regions of the UK, each providing services for up to 15 million customers each.

Water companies are regulated by government authorities, such as Ofwat, in order to ensure they deliver efficient clean water and sanitation within their area.

The Challenge

WRc examined the headroom available at an activated sludge sewage works to explore how much third-party sludge could be accepted without compromising compliance with consents.

The Solution

The modelling looked at the effects of having one lane out of operation and the benefits of flow balancing at the sludge import point as against having tankered sludges discharge directly into the main flow.

Estimates of the permitted additional sludge imports for the different scenarios were produced, indicating that the sludge imports could be increased by at least three-fold.
