Flow loop

The WRc flow loop is used for development and testing work on closed pipe flow meters (in-line, insertation and clamp-on), water mains operations, cleaning and inspection systems.

It incorporates several different pipe materials in a mixture of buried and above ground sections. The loop can accommodate bespoke testing of any pipework and fittings up to DN300.

A series of traceable instruments accurately record flow rates and other parameters during testing. An integral system allows reference measurements to be recorded in conjunction with test equipment - making data capture and storage quick, reliable and easy.

Technical details:

  • Location - mostly outside with buried and above ground sections.
  • Flow rates of up to 120 l/s.
  • Above ground straight runs of over 40m.
  • Variety of pipework up to 300mm.
  • Flexibility to change above ground sections to suit testing requirements.
  • Traceable logging functionality, including temperature, pressure and flow instrumentation.
  • Ample surrounding space, allowing test lines to be extensively configured to accommodate bespoke testing.

Hire and support:

We have a range of flexible options to suit all requirements:

  • Rig hire with initial training and induction,
  • Rig hire with WRc technician support,
  • Full testing provision from experienced WRc staff.

    Recently used by:

    • A large manufacturer as part of a training course on clamp-on water meters held at WRc to improve meter installation.
    • A UK water company to prove flow rates from air bleed valves.
    • A leading university to test a prototype valve during the development process.
